Numsa disappointed about withdrawn court case | News Article

A lack of sufficient evidence resulted in a sexual harassment case being withdrawn against a senior mine official at Laxtonn Chrome Mine in Rustenburg in the North West yesterday in the Rustenburg Magistrate’s court.

This came after the mine official was accused for allegedly demanding sexual favours from a female mineworker in August 2018.

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa’s (Numsa) spokesperson, Phakamile Hlubi-Majola, told OFM News that the union is disappointed at the outcomes of the case.

“The allegations are very serious and we were hoping that our member would receive some sort of justice. So, we are hoping that the matter will be reinstated and be placed back on the court roll, as it was withdrawn in order for them to conduct investigations.”

Hlubi-Majola further added that Numsa is urging the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to conduct their investigations so that they can get to the bottom of the issue.

Numsa previously reported that the mine official was suspended after the union demanded that the mine take action against him. Furthermore, an underground sit-in was conducted by the union in June this year, demanding that the mine official should be suspended after his suspension was lifted in February.

Hlubi-Majola also stated that the union foresees a successful prosecution of the perpetrator.
