Mineworker dies at NW Sibanye-Stillwater mine─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 11:43 Sun, 13 Oct 2019
Mining giant Sibanye-Stillwater confirms one of its miners at the Thembelani Shaft in Rustenburg, North West, died in a fall of ground incident this weekend.
Sibanye-Stillwater spokesperson, James Wellstead, says the company will probe the circumstances surrounding the incident with the relevant authorities.
Wellstead stresses the safety of the company’s employees is important and they are trying to identify ways to curb such accidents.
The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) is not so convinced the mining company is prioritising the life of its mineworkers. AMCU President, Joseph Mathunjwa alleges three people have lost their lives at this particular mine in 2019 so far and this is of concern to them.
It is alleged the mineworker was originally from Mozambique. This is yet to be confirmed.
