Sanco calls for peaceful end of year examination─── 05:19 Wed, 16 Oct 2019
Learners must be allowed to write their final exams in a peaceful and conducive environment, the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) in the North West said on Tuesday.
"We wish all learners who will be sitting for the examinations from this week the very best and call on them to stay focused and not to be distracted from the task at hand.
"The sacrifices and extra effort they have had to put to prepare for the exams must be jealously guarded so that they achieve their objective," provincial chairperson Paul Sebegoe said.
"Public transport operators must demonstrate their patriotism through hassle-free transportation of learners to their various examination centres.
"Community protests must be suspended or alternatively their planning must take into account that disruption of schooling and the transport system will adversely affect learners who are on the verge of achieving a qualification that will open opportunities for them."
He called on education authorities to ensure that checks and balances in the administration of the exams were in place to ensure that there were no glitches and hiccups and that measures were in place to safeguard the integrity of the examination process.
Two classrooms and an office were torched last week at Leruntse Lesedi Secondary School in Vrischgewaagd near Delaraeyville.
One classroom was used for storage and a photocopying machine, refrigerator, microwave, textbooks, stationery packs for learners, lawnmower, garden tools, cleaning materials and files were completely destroyed in the fire.
In the second classroom, 30 tables and 60 chairs were also burnt out.
It was not yet known how examination would be affected by this incident.
A case of arson was opened with the South African Police Service.
Sebegoe said they expected the revision campaigns and all efforts to ensure that students prepared for the examination, would yield good results and also improve the skills and competencies of the learners who would be exiting the school system.
