NW school accident's death toll rises─── LUCKY NKUYANE 07:42 Tue, 22 Oct 2019
The death toll in the North West school accident has now risen to eight, after another learner died at Bophelong Hospital in Mahikeng.
Spokesperson for the Department of Education, Elias Malindi, says the learner was part of a group of 20 pupils who were admitted to hospital after sustaining serious injuries.
This follows a horrific accident that earlier claimed the lives of seven fellow pupils when their driver lost control and hit a tree at Rietpan Village near Zeerust on Saturday.
Malindi says the bereaved families have agreed to hold a joint memorial service for all the deceased on Thursday, 24 October, at 10:00.
It will take place at Letlhakane Primary school, Rietpan Village. Education MEC, Mmaphefo Matsemela has once again conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
OFM News previously reported that the department had distanced itself from a soccer event that 30 school pupils attended in Borakalalo Village on Saturday, before the accident.
Malindi said the event was not organised by the department. He added it was organised by communities in those areas where the pupils came from.
Six scholars died on the scene and one died in hospital after the driver of a bakkie they were travelling in lost control and collided with a tree.
