Probe into Limpopo pupils carrying guns to school─── 19:00 Wed, 11 Mar 2020
The Department of Education in Limpopo is investigating two separate incidents involving pupils carrying guns to schools.
One pupil was caught with a weapon at a primary school near Polokwane and the other at a secondary school in Seshego.
The department's spokesperson Sam Makondo says these incidents are very concerning.
"Because the South African's schools act prohibits the carrying of dangerous weapons to schools. Schools are not war zones but places where teaching and learning should take place without teachers, and learners feeling unsafe.
"It is a place which must be respected by learners, educators and anyone who visits the school for this reason or that reason.”
Makondo says it’s up to parents to be responsible and ensuring their children do not carry weapons.
"It is a collaboration between our schools, the parents and the community at large in terms of emphasis the dangers of carrying such dangerous weapons to a place where they are not required or needed.
"So parents must be heavily involved in taking responsibility in this regard and the learners must face the consequences of disregarding a known rule".
Makondo says more details will be revealed in the report from the district.
