Gauteng sees surge in active #COVID19 cases | News Article

Gauteng's surge in the number of COVID-19 cases hasn't come as a shock according to Gauteng Health officials.

In fact, Health MEC Bandile Masuku says this was expected.

The number of active cases in the province has doubled in the space of a week, at over 20,000.

But officials say there’s no cause for panic just yet.

Gauteng currently accounts for 38 percent of the country's active cases, surpassing the Western Cape.

This is different from the number of cumulative cases, which still has the Western Cape as number one.

The province says it is bracing to receive over 1.3 million pupils as the second phase of schools reopening will happen on 6 July.

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says 176 schools were affected by COVID-19, with 58 pupils and 188 teachers testing positive.

However, he's upbeat that schools will be ready to resume with classes.
