SA’s #Covid19 cases increase by 2000+ in one day─── 10:22 Thu, 22 Oct 2020
Covid-19 cases in South Africa have increased by more than 2000 over the past 24 hours.
In his latest report, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize says the number of confirmed cases now stands at 708 359, with 2055 new cases reported.
"Regrettably, we report 85 COVID-19 related deaths. This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths to 18 741.
"Of the 85 new deaths reported, 8 occurred in the past 48 hours," said Mkhize.
The significant jump comes after Mkhize expressed his concern on Wednesday over the rise in positive cases over the past week.
The minister, who is himself recovering at home from the virus, said he is concerned about the epidemiological reports.
"I wish to bring to the attention of all South Africans that our epidemiological reports are showing that in the country, over the last 7 days there has been an increase of 9.1% in new cases. Similarly, over the last 14 days, there has been an increase of 10.7%," he said.
The minister also expressed concern over some provinces, such as the Western Cape, reporting a high level of infections.
Mkhize says new data shows the Western Cape has recorded a 42% increase in new infections in seven days.
