Mayor blasts Hawks for Ace's warrant─── LUCKY NKUYANE 07:24 Wed, 11 Nov 2020
Gauteng's Ekurhuleni mayor, Mzwandile Masini, has come out guns blazing in defence of the ANC Secretary-General, Ace Magashule, following a warrant of arrest for Magashule - issued by the Hawks - on charges of fraud and corruption.
It relates to a R255 million failed asbestos project. On his Twitter account Masina, who is no stranger to controversy, pledged support for Magashule and said he will be in court with Magashule to support him against what he calls a democratic disgrace. He says arresting leadership based on apartheid laws does not make sense and that he rejects the arrest.
Masina appears to have further taken a swipe at President Cyril Ramaphosa, whilst indicating that no stepping down [for Magashule] is applicable until "those documents" are unsealed in court. Previously, Ramaphosa told party members that those entangled in scandals which have the potential to put the name of the ANC into disrepute must immediately step aside.
In 2019, Ramaphosa asked the Gauteng High Court to seal certain information contained in the record of Public Protector (PP) Busiswe Mkhwebane's report on the Bosasa scandal. Ramaphosa also faced the CR17 leaks nightmare following his presidential campaign in Nasrec 2017 where wealthy business people allegedly donated millions of rands into his presidential campaign.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the Free State Hawks spokesperson, Lynda Steyn, confirmed to OFM News that the former ANC premier will only hand himself over to authorities on Friday, following revelations that a warrant for his arrest has been issued.
Steyn said Magashule will appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Friday in connection with the 2013/14 asbestos housing project that dominated media headlines in September.
