A 36-year-old prosecutor in the Northern Cape is serving time in prison after he was slapped with a four-year sentence.

The Hawks' provincial spokesperson, Nomthandazo Mnisi, says Anele Khohlani was previously sentenced to pay a fine of R60 000 or face three years in prison after he was found guilty of corruption in the Kimberley Magistrate's Court in 2019 for accepting a bribe of R1 500.

However, he had sought remedial action against his sentencing but the High Court in the province dismissed his appeal and slapped him with a six-year prison term.

In its ruling, the High Court sentenced Khohlani to six years imprisonment of which two years are suspended for the period of five years on condition that he is not found guilty of corruption during the period of suspension.

"Khohlani was convicted on a charge of corruption after he was found guilty for accepting a gratification of R1 500 to withdraw a criminal case against a member of the public. The Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Major General Kholekile Galawe congratulated the Serious Corruption Investigation team for their sterling work," Mnisi adds.
