This has been revealed in the latest statistics released by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) on Thursday evening.

It shows that there are currently a total of 10 763 patients receiving treatment for Covid-19 related complications at facilities nationwide

When it comes to new cases, there was a total of 16 078 new infections in the country, which brings total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 1 877 143.

"This increase represents a 24.5 % positivity rate, a further 148 Covid-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 59 406 to date," reads the statement by the NICD.

Gauteng remains the epicentre driving the third wave, and reported 9 521 new infections on Thursday. 

Earlier, Premier David Makhura spoke of his concern over the lack of Covid-19 compliance by residents.
