Though Eskom is not exploiting it to its full potential, South Africa needs coal.
This is according to energy minister Gwede Mantashe.
He is directing a discussion on coal's future in the context of the just energy transition.
With Eskom spending R12 billion on diesel this year, the nation is having difficulty keeping the lights on.
