Warrant of arrest issued for former Botswana president─── 12:03 Fri, 30 Dec 2022
A warrant of arrest has been issued in Botswana for former president, Ian Khama.
Khama is facing multiple criminal charges including the illegal possession of five firearms.
The alleged transgression dates to March 2016.
In the warrant, Khama is sought before the Broadhurst Magistrate’s Court.
Khama, who governed one of Africa's most stable democracies for 10 years until 2018, has been living in self-imposed exile in South Africa since November 2021.
The 69-year-old former statesman fell out with his handpicked successor Mokgweetsi Masisi, whom he has accused of authoritarianism.
Khama is accused alongside four others, including a former intelligence chief and a suspended police boss.
The five face a total of 38 charges ranging from receiving stolen property and unlawful possession of firearms to registering firearms under false pretenses.
The illegal possession of firearms carries a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment in Botswana.
