“One purported confidant mentioned to the publication that the motive behind the arrest was to disgrace Mantashe and portray him as a corrupt figure.”

The NPA’s Investigating Directorate (ID) says it cannot comment on its investigations, including the possible arrest of ANC chairperson Gwede Mantashe.

This is in reference to a Sunday publication report claiming the imminent arrest of Mantashe. According to spokesperson Henry Mamothame, the NPA has not decided about nor discussed this matter.

Mamothame said the ID will continue to work without fear, favour, or prejudice. He also appealed to be given the space to do their work without any unnecessary and unwarranted speculations.

The Sunday World article alleged two associates of Mantashe have disclosed that they are familiar with a plan to apprehend him. One purported confidant mentioned to the publication that the motive behind the arrest was to disgrace Mantashe and portray him as a corrupt figure. “This isn't a criminal issue but a political vendetta.”

The third section of the state capture report recommended an investigation into Mantashe for potential corruption following the provision of complimentary security upgrades at his three properties by Bosasa.

The report disclosed that numerous ANC officials were allegedly bribed by the scandal-ridden company Bosasa in exchange for ensuring access to a series of lucrative government contracts.

In response to the report, Mantashe emphasised that there is no prima facie evidence against him. He expressed his intent to subject the report to judicial review that relies on assumptions rather than evidence. These comments were made by Gwede Mantashe in 2022.
