Police have launched an investigation into a kidnapping and assault involving the head of investigations and operations at the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (Idac).

Idac spokesperson Henry Mamothame said Matthews Sesoko was kidnapped while driving home and was assaulted before he was abandoned near Rabie Ridge in the Midrand area in the early hours of Saturday morning (8/11).

The suspects allegedly took off with Sesoko’s cellphone and laptop. Sesoko managed to get help and was taken to a nearby police station, where he reported the incident. At the time the matter was made public, he was receiving medical attention following what officials described as a traumatic experience.

“While the NPA is wary of making any speculation on the motive behind such horrific action and whether it is related to his work, the incident and its timing reflect the possible dangers in their workspace. The incident has been reported to the police for criminal investigation,” said Mamothame.

The attack on Sesoko comes amid heightened scrutiny of corruption investigations involving senior law enforcement officials. Earlier this week, Idac’s head, advocate Andrea Johnson, told parliament’s ad hoc committee her life had changed since the arrest of crime intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo.

Khumalo, along with other senior police officials, was arrested in June on charges of fraud and corruption. Johnson told the committee she had received threatening messages, including one sent directly to her phone warning her to get their body bags ready because she and her team had gone too far.

Johnson used her testimony to highlight Idac’s ongoing efforts to clamp down on state capture-related corruption and to dismiss claims suggesting the unit was interfering in the police's human resource matters.
