President Cyril Ramaphosa has paid tribute to a former South African Revenue Service (Sars) commissioner.
Oupa Magashula passed away at the age of 63 after a long illness and an extended period of hospitalisation. Rampaphosa expressed his condolences to Magashula’s family, friends, and colleagues, honouring his lifelong dedication to public service and national development.
He reflected on Magashula’s pivotal role in South Africa’s economic landscape. “Oupa Magashula devoted his life to the development of our economy and the stimulation of entrepreneurship among a new business generation.
“He led Sars at a critical period during which our economy was affected by the global downturn of 2008, but during which we also relied on fiscal resources to host the 2010 Fifa World Cup.”
Magashula, who served as commissioner from July 2009 to July 2013, is remembered as a leader who not only steered the revenue service during turbulent economic times but also prioritised the needs of vulnerable South Africans.
“Oupa Magashula was an astute, compassionate leader whose mission at Sars was driven by the needs of the most vulnerable South Africans and the requirements for economic growth. He went on to contribute to growth through his roles as chair or director of diverse businesses that benefited from his intellect, varied professional experience and commitment to a better South Africa.”

Before his rise to national prominence, Magashula began his professional journey as a trade unionist.
He later transitioned into the corporate world and subsequently into public service, where he became a key figure in South Africa’s revenue administration. After leaving Sars, he continued to make significant contributions in various leadership positions within the business sector.
In a statement issued on Wednesday (3/12), Magashula’s family said he would be remembered for his humility, warmth, and unwavering commitment to South Africa and its people. Details regarding his funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
