Isaacs: No Celebrations─── 09:22 Tue, 10 Aug 2010
Kaizer Chiefs defender Dominic Isaacs said there was no time for celebrations after they won the Telkom Charity Cup, beating Orlando Pirates 4-3 in a penalty shootout at Soccer City.
“We were too tired to celebrate. This whole week we have trained hard and the games really drained us,” the centre-back said.
“It was a good workout and even better because we won the Cup. The players were happy, the technical team and of course our fans. They can expect more of this,” he said with a big smile.
Chiefs used two teams on the day, beating Mamelodi Sundowns in the semi-final 1-0 and then taking the lead, but drawing 1-1 with Pirates in the final and coming out tops in the shootout.
Isaacs played a sterling role for the AmaKhosi, making timely tackles, interceptions and commanding the back four which earned him praise from the media, but the number five said the best is yet to come.
“I measured my fitness yesterday and I will say I am 80%. This was only the fourth week of pre-season and I think everyone did well. The first game was tough and we competed well.”
“Sundowns are a quality side and it was a good test for us and I am pleased with our performance, but there is room for improvement,” he noted.
“Watching from the stands gave me a good perspective of how we should play defensively as the second team held their shape. The attack was good but being a defender I obviously looked at that department closely and I think we can all be happy,” the former Ajax player said.
Charity Cup winners do not usually do well in the league title race as history shows they usually end up as runners-up. However, when Chiefs last won the Charity Cup in 2003 they went on to capture the league title as well. Isaacs dismissed the myth that they won’t do well this season.
“A win is a win, and if we win another game and another game, it becomes a habit, and that is what we want. Winning breeds success,” Isaacs said emphatically.
“I don’t think any of us are going to pay attention to that fallacy as our aim is to win the league. We can’t give up now because we won the Charity Cup,” the Chiefs number five said. - psl.co.za
