Marumo Gallants stun Matsatsantsa A Pitori─── MORGAN PIEK 05:59 Sat, 30 Nov 2024
Marumo Gallants delivered a standout performance to edge out SuperSport United 1-0 in a Premier Soccer League clash at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Friday evening.
The win was just the team from Bloemfontein’s second league victory of the season, but importantly, it was their third unbeaten game on the bounce following a recent 1-0 win against AmaZulu and 1-1 draw against TS Galaxy.
The victory marked a pivotal moment for Dan Malesela’s men, as they not only ended SuperSport’s unbeaten league run but also climbed to 12th place on the PSL standings, boosting their survival hopes.
The decisive moment came in the 12th minute when Edgar Manaka calmly converted a penalty. Despite SuperSport goalkeeper Thakasani Mbanjwa’s best efforts, the ball found the back of the net, giving Marumo Gallants an early lead.

Gallants showed tactical discipline throughout the match, balancing their defensive organisation with a readiness to pounce on opportunities. While SuperSport dominated possession and created more attacking chances in the first half, Malesela’s side maintained their composure, denying Gavin Hunt’s men any breakthroughs.
In the second half, Marumo’s defense absorbed relentless pressure from SuperSport, with Bradley Grobler and Terrence Dzvukamanja both coming close to scoring. Dzvukamanja’s late effort that sailed just wide highlighted the Gallants’ resilience in the dying minutes.

The victory underlines Marumo Gallants’ ability to compete under pressure, as they held firm to secure all three points in an away fixture. Daniel Msendami’s dynamic display earned him the man-of-the-match accolade, further cementing Gallants’ spirited performance. This is exactly the kind of attitude that saw them reach the semi-finals of the Carling Knockout Cup, and even in the 2-0 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns in the semis, that made it very difficult for their opponents.
It will not be important for Gallants to maintain this momentum when they face the Carling Knockout Cup champions, Magesi FC, next week Saturday in Bloemfontein.
