Lesotho secured their spot in the group stage of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania 2027 qualifiers with a gritty 2-1 win over fellow COSAFA side Seychelles in Bloemfontein on Sunday.

The tie was finely balanced after a goalless first leg at the Toyota Stadium on Thursday, but Likuena did just enough in the return fixture at the same venue to edge the aggregate score 2-1 and keep their qualifying hopes alive.

For Seychelles, it’s another case of so near yet so far. The islanders have now fallen short of the group stage in their last three AFCON qualifying campaigns, with their last appearance at that level dating back to the 2019 qualifiers.

In contrast, Lesotho continues to show admirable consistency, having reached the group stage in every edition since 2013.

It was Seychelles who struck first, and in extraordinary fashion. Goalkeeper Sekhoane Moerane found himself well off his line attempting to deal with a long ball, but misjudged the situation.

That left Brandon Labrosse with a golden opportunity, and he didn’t hesitate, sending a spectacular long-range effort from around 40 yards into an empty net.

Lesotho, however, responded with intent after the break. Just four minutes into the second half, Lebohang Lesako brought the home side level, sparking renewed belief among the Bloemfontein crowd.

With the scores level, Seychelles briefly held the advantage thanks to the away-goals rule, meaning Lesotho needed to find a winner to progress. And that moment arrived late in the game.

Experienced forward Motebang Sera rose highest to meet a well-delivered free-kick, powering home a decisive header with eight minutes remaining to seal the victory and send Lesotho through.

It was a performance full of character from Lesotho, who once again proved their ability to grind out results when it matters most.
