The South African men’s under-20 football team are the champions of Africa – for the first time ever – and they achieved this historic feat against all odds.

On Sunday evening, Amajita lifted the 2025 Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations trophy after a tense and unforgettable final at the 30 June Stadium in Ismailia, edging Morocco 1-0.

The North Africans were wasteful in front of the goal, and South Africa’s relentless high press eventually paid off.

Morocco, the more fluid side in the first half, created the better chances through Jones El Abdellaoui and Ilias Boumassaoudi, but South African goalkeeper Fletcher Smythe-Lowe was once again in inspired form, keeping them at bay.

South Africa, who grew stronger as the tournament progressed after losing their opening match to Egypt, showed both resilience and patience. Shakeel April and Mfundo Vilakazi had half-chances, but neither side managed to break the deadlock before the break.

This was South Africa’s first appearance in a final in 27 years, and it was a 70th-minute wonder goal by Gomolemo Kekana that sealed the deal. Kekana unleashed a powerful right-footed strike from outside the box, curling the ball into the top corner.

The goal – awarded after a VAR review – finally broke the deadlock in a match defined by tactical discipline and defensive organisation.

The star of the night, however, was 18-year-old goalkeeper Smythe-Lowe, who was deservedly named Player of the Final.

Speaking after the match, Smythe-Lowe said that while individual recognition is always appreciated, it was ultimately a team effort that helped them make history.

“It means a lot – not just to me, but to the team. This award is for the team,” said Smythe-Lowe.

“I mean, without them, we’d be nowhere. Together we are stronger.

“Obviously, it’s nice to play my part, but the real plaudits go to the squad – to everyone who puts in the work, even the people behind the scenes: the physios, doctors, fitness coaches, and of course, the players themselves. I mean, it’s amazing what we’ve been able to achieve.”

Smythe-Lowe was named as the Goalkeeper of the Tournament, while Tylon Smith, who scored the winner in the semi-final against Nigeria, was named as the Defender of the Tournament.

Meanwhile, the Flying Eagles of Nigeria claimed the bronze medal after beating hosts Egypt 4-3 on penalties, following a 1-1 draw after extra time.

South Africa’s next challenge will be preparing for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup, scheduled to take place in Chile from 27 September to 19 October.
