Monyane to replace injured Mobbie in Bafana camp─── MORGAN PIEK 13:15 Sat, 06 Sep 2025

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has wasted no time in shuffling his squad, calling up Orlando Pirates defender Thabiso Monyane to replace the injured Nyiko Mobbie.
Mobbie’s evening ended suddenly on Friday night (5/9) when he was pulled off the field less than five minutes into South Africa’s important 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Lesotho at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein.

Monyane is expected to join the national team camp in Bloemfontein over the weekend as Broos and his technical team now set their sights on a much-anticipated clash with Nigeria on Tuesday evening.
This fixture could go a long way in shaping Group C of the qualifiers.
Bafana’s team doctor, Tshepo Molobi, confirmed the Siwelele FC player Mobbie was rushed to hospital shortly after the match and underwent surgery on Saturday morning.
“The injury happened as a result of a clash of heads in the first half, and unfortunately, Nyiko sustained a fracture of the eye socket in three places.”
He said a further medical update will be shared once the player’s recovery timeline is clearer.
There was also some concern over Thabo Moloisane, who limped off in the 52nd minute, but Molobi offered a more positive outlook on his condition. “Thabo is doing well and should return to training on Saturday afternoon.”

Despite the early setback with injuries, Bafana Bafana put in a convincing performance to sweep aside Lesotho 3-0 in front of their home supporters. The result allowed South Africa to cement their position at the top of Group C, where they hold a five-point cushion.
Their lead was strengthened after Benin edged Zimbabwe 1-0 earlier in the day to climb into second place with 11 points.
With momentum on their side and confidence high, Bafana now face a far sterner test against perennial African powerhouse Nigeria. Broos and his charges will know that a positive result at the Toyota Stadium on Tuesday could bring them one step closer to realising their World Cup dream.
