The Bloemfontein-based Marumo Gallants are gearing up for what could be a historic weekend, with coach Alexandre Lafitte confident his young side can go all the way in the 2025 Carling Knockout Cup final in Polokwane.

On Saturday, the Gallants will face the mighty Orlando Pirates, one of South Africa’s most formidable sides, in a bid to lift the trophy for the first time in their history.

On Sunday, Marumo played out a 1-1 draw against Magesi FC in Bloemfontein. Magesi, the outgoing champions, famously beat Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in the 2024 final at Toyota Stadium, showing they’re never to be underestimated.

Marumo’s journey has been impressive, the road to the final has been anything but easy. They eliminated some of the country’s top teams, beating Sundowns on penalties, thrashing Stellenbosch FC 4-0 in a rain-soaked Bloemfontein, and knocking out Golden Arrows on penalties in Durban during the semi-finals.

Facing the Buccaneers will be a completely different challenge. With 13 of  25 of Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana squad called up for the upcoming African Cup of Nations, being Pirates, they are arguably the form team in South Africa right now.

Still, history is on the Gallants’ side. During the Premier Soccer League round two, Marumo stunned Pirates 2-1 in Bloemfontein thanks to a late Jaisen Clifford goal. Earlier in March, under then-coach Abdes Ouddou, Gallants recorded a memorable 2-0 victory over the Sea Robbers - a night still talked about in Bloemfontein. Ouddou has since left to take the reins at Pirates.

At just 28-years-old, Alexandre Lafitte is the youngest coach in PSL history, and has managed to lead a team to a final in his debut season. Speaking to OFM Sport, he highlighted that team unity is the club’s biggest strength.

“The cup is a different competition, and it’s a big opportunity for the club, for the team, and for everyone involved,” said Lafitte.

“We’re excited for the event on Saturday, but for now, we’re focused and preparing for the challenge ahead. I’m very excited and happy to play in this final, but honestly my focus is on helping the club and the team win the trophy. It’s an important moment for all of us, and I want to show respect to Marumo Gallants – and hopefully we can bring the trophy home.”

Kick-off for this eagerly anticipated showdown between the Mighty Buccaneers and Bahlabane Ba Ntwa at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium is set for 18:00 on Saturday.
