Mamelodi Sundowns produced a ruthless attacking display on Saturday, but their defensive frailties were equally exposed in a 7-4 Premiership victory over Siwelele FC as the title race intensified heading into the final stretch of the season.

The high-scoring encounter delivered drama from start to finish, with Sundowns storming into a dominant first-half lead before both sides traded blows in an open and chaotic second stanza.

The win moved the Brazilians onto 68 points with one league fixture remaining, while second-placed Orlando Pirates still have three matches left to keep the pressure on the defending champions.

Sundowns wasted little time asserting themselves and looked dangerous from the opening whistle. Teboho Mokoena first tested goalkeeper Ricardo Goss with a long-range effort in the sixth minute before breaking the deadlock moments later.

After a corner caused problems inside the box, the midfielder reacted quickest to fire home from close range.

The hosts doubled their advantage soon after when Tashreeq Matthews finished off a slick passing move with a clinical header, leaving Siwelele chasing shadows early on.

With Sundowns dominating possession and dictating the tempo, Siwelele battled to gain any meaningful foothold in the contest. Their problems worsened midway through the half when Brayan Leon’s threatening strike forced Nyiko Mobbie into turning the ball into his own net.

Despite being under heavy pressure, Siwelele found a lifeline in the 30th minute. Gamphani Lungu finished smartly after a rapid counterattack to reduce the deficit and briefly halt Sundowns’ momentum.

That relief proved short-lived, however, as Sundowns exploded again before the break. Matthews grabbed his second of the afternoon in the 37th minute before Leon capped a flowing team move to hand the hosts a commanding 5-1 halftime advantage.

Siwelele showed renewed energy after the interval and struck again five minutes into the second half through Lungu, who finished confidently from inside the box. Sundowns responded almost immediately when Leon powered home a header at the back post from a pinpoint Nuno Santos delivery.

The Venezuelan striker completed his hat-trick just before the hour mark with a superb volley after sustained pressure inside the Siwelele half.

To their credit, the visitors refused to surrender. Relebogile Mokhuoane added a spectacular long-range effort in the 64th minute, while Lungu sealed his own hat-trick from the penalty spot late in the match after Divine Lunga was penalised inside the area.

Although Sundowns looked unstoppable going forward, Siwelele continued to threaten in attack as the closing stages turned into an end-to-end spectacle before the final whistle confirmed a staggering 11-goal thriller.

Meanwhile, in Bloemfontein, the relegation-threatened Marumo Gallants and Richards Bay played to a 1-1 draw.
