Ronaldo inspires Portugal’s first win as World Cup group stage intensifies─── MORGAN PIEK 06:41 Wed, 24 Jun 2026
Cristiano Ronaldo rolled back the years with a record-breaking performance as Portugal produced one of the standout displays of the 2026 Football World Cup on Tuesday to secure their first win.
Playing in Houston, Texas, Portugal hammered Uzbekistan 5–0 in their crucial Group K clash. Ronaldo scored twice inside the opening 39 minutes to lead the rout and became the first player in history to score at six different Football World Cups.
The veteran forward silenced any doubts about his form and reminded the football world why he remains one of the game’s greatest icons. Portugal’s other goals came from Nuno Mendes, Rafael Leão and an Uzbekistan own goal as Roberto Martinez’s side moved firmly into contention for a place in the Round of 32.
Later in Group K, Colombia edged DR Congo 1–0 in Guadalajara, Mexico. The narrow victory strengthened Colombia’s knockout hopes and set up a tantalising final-round showdown against Portugal, with top spot in the group likely to be on the line.
Group L produced far fewer goals but no shortage of drama.
In Boston, England was frustrated by a resilient Ghana outfit in a 0–0 draw. Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, the Three Lions could not find a breakthrough.

The Black Stars defended superbly to earn a valuable point that keeps them firmly in the race for qualification. The result leaves England and Ghana level at the top of the group with four points each after two matches.
Meanwhile, Croatia kept their hopes of advancing alive with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Panama in Toronto, Canada. Ante Budimir‘s second-half strike proved decisive as the 2018 World Cup finalists collected their first win of the tournament. Panama, on the other hand, remain without a point and their chances of reaching the Round of 32 are effectively over.
Ronaldo’s influence was undoubtedly the story of the day. The 41-year-old not only scored twice but also provided leadership and movement that opened space for his teammates. Portugal’s convincing victory has reignited belief that they can make a deep run in North America.
Attention now shifts to Groups A, B and C, where several teams could secure progression to the Round of 32.
In Group B, Switzerland face Canada in Vancouver, while Bosnia and Herzegovina takes on Qatar in another crucial encounter. Both matches will kick off simultaneously as teams battle for qualification.
Group C action sees Scotland tackle Brazil in Miami, while Morocco face Haiti in Atlanta. Brazil will be aiming to maintain their strong momentum, while Morocco know a victory could significantly boost their chances of advancing.
South African fans will be keeping a close eye on Group A in the early hours on Thursday morning. Bafana Bafana take on South Korea in a must-win match, while Mexico face Czechia. With qualification spots still up for grabs, the final round of Group A fixtures promises high drama and plenty of tension.
Victory for South Africa could be enough to book a place in the knockout rounds, depending on the outcome of the other group match.
After Ronaldo’s historic exploits in Houston, the pressure is now on the rest of the tournament’s stars to deliver their own memorable moments as the race for the Round of 32 heats up.
