Ecuador stuns Germany as Türkiye shocks USA─── MORGAN PIEK 06:43 Fri, 26 Jun 2026
The race for places in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 reached fever pitch on Thursday as dramatic comebacks, major upsets and heartbreak defined another thrilling day of action.
With the group stage entering its decisive final stretch, qualification dreams were either realised or left hanging by the finest of margins.
Group D produced one of the biggest surprises of the tournament in Los Angeles, where Türkiye stunned the United States 3-2. Although the Americans had already secured their place in the knockout stage, Türkiye bowed out in style with an entertaining victory that showcased their attacking quality.
In the other Group D clash in San Francisco, Australia and Paraguay battled to a tense goalless draw. The point was enough to send the Socceroos through to the Round of 32, while Paraguay’s fate depended on the ranking of the best third-placed teams.
Group E delivered arguably the result of the day as Ecuador fought back to beat Germany 2–1 at the New York/New Jersey Stadium. The South Americans claimed a famous victory to strengthen their hopes of progressing as one of the best third-placed teams.
Côte d’Ivoire also finished their campaign on a high with a 2–0 win over Curaçao in Philadelphia, keeping their knockout ambitions alive. Despite the defeat, Germany had already done enough in their previous matches to book a place in the Round of 32.
Group F concluded with the Netherlands securing top spot after an impressive 3–1 victory over Tunisia in Kansas City. An early own goal, combined with another clinical display from Brian Brobbey, laid the foundation for a confident Dutch performance as they marched into the knockout rounds.
Meanwhile, Japan and Sweden shared the spoils in a 1–1 draw in Dallas, a result that was enough to send Japan through alongside the Netherlands. Tunisia’s disappointing campaign ended without a single point.
Attention now turns to another pivotal day of football on Friday as Groups G, H and I conclude.
Group I promises a thrilling encounter in Boston, where unbeaten France face Norway. France have looked every bit like genuine title contenders after comfortable victories over Senegal and Iraq, but Norway have impressed as well and know a win could see them finish top of the group.
At the same time in Toronto, Senegal takes on Iraq in a must-win clash, with both nations still chasing a place in the Round of 32.
Later in the day, all eyes will be on Guadalajara, where Spain meets Uruguay in a crucial Group H showdown. Spain have gathered momentum with every outing and are well placed following their emphatic victory over Saudi Arabia. Uruguay, meanwhile, needs a positive result to keep their World Cup dream alive. Simultaneously in Houston, Cape Verde faces Saudi Arabia in another match carrying enormous qualification significance.
The final fixtures of the day come from Group G, where Belgium takes on New Zealand in Vancouver, while Egypt faces Iran in Seattle. With the group still finely balanced, every goal could prove decisive in the battle for automatic qualification and the coveted best third-placed spots.
With the Round of 32 now within touching distance, there is no longer any room for error. Every point, every goal and every save could make the difference as the world’s best football nations continue their quest to lift the biggest prize in the game.
