The renowned rugby commentator and pundit had a stent put in during an emergency procedure after being rushed to the hospital by his wife, Belinda.

At approximately 22:00 on Tuesday night he complained of chest pains and drowsiness.

He was taken to Paarl Mediclinic where it was confirmed that he had suffered from a heart attack. From there he was rushed to the Panorama ranch for further treatment.

Toks van der Linde, a friend, colleague, and former teammate of Wiese told OFM that his former roommate is stable at this stage.

“Kobus definitely had a heart attack. He was rushed to the Panorama Mediclinic to get him to one of the top cardiologists in South Africa, Dr Clive Corbett.

“At 2:30 on Wednesday morning, a stent was installed to open his veins, because he didn't react to some of the medication.

“For now his is stable and they are going to monitor him for 72 hours. Then they will make a decision on the way forward.”

Van der Linde added that Wiese was a hard man on the rugby field and his fighting spirit will see him through the ordeal.

“Kobus is a strong character with a strong mind. We were roommates for years in the Springbok team, and I know that he will pull through. I think God definitely gave him a second chance. He is a lucky fellow.

“I think that this is a wake-up call again for everyone in South Africa. You just don't know what is going to happen. Kobus is only 56-years-old.”

Wiese was a part of the Springbok team which won the Rugby World Cup in 1995. Of that group of players, the coach Kitch Christie, as well as Ruben Kruger, Joost van der Westhuizen, James Small and Chester Williams have all passed on.
