Bloemfontein’s Philip Henning enjoyed a career-defining moment on Sunday when he lifted the first ATP Challenger title of his career, edging Bulgaria's Alexander Donski in a gripping final at the Rise Centurion Open.

The Bloemfontein-born tennis star delighted the home crowd with a hard-fought victory in a match that swung back and forth before being decided in a tense match tiebreak. Ultimately the Grey College old boy prevailed with a 6-2, 3-6, and 7-6 victory.

Henning looked set for a comfortable afternoon when he stormed through the opening set 6-2, using his powerful baseline game to put Donski under pressure from the outset.

But the Bulgarian qualifier, who was also competing in his first ATP Challenger final, showed tremendous fighting spirit. Refusing to let the occasion overwhelm him, Donski regrouped and struck back in the second set, claiming it 6-3 to force a decider.

With both players chasing the biggest title of their careers, the contest went down to the wire. Henning eventually held his nerve when it mattered most, sealing an 8-6 victory in the deciding match tiebreak to spark celebrations among the local supporters.

The triumph capped an unforgettable fortnight for the South African, who produced a series of impressive performances throughout the tournament and rewarded the fans who packed the courts in Centurion.

“We've had a great week with great tennis,” said Henning after the victory.

“Alexander had a rocket of a serve that I sometimes could not even see – he was a tough opponent. This moment is very special for me. I got to lift my first ATP title at home and to share it with South African fans makes it even more special.

“Hopefully, there will be many more to come. The past two weeks have been awesome, and the ATP tournament has been a great success.”

Although he fell just short of the title, Donski can reflect with pride on a breakthrough week. The Bulgarian battled through the qualifying rounds before reaching the first ATP Challenger final of his career, producing several impressive performances along the way.

“It has been a great week with really great tennis,” said Donski.

“There were a lot of tough matches against great players. I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to compete at this level.

“I would like to thank the Rise Centurion Open team and the ATP for hosting the Challenger events – they have been the absolute best. I have been training so hard, and I hope to be back here.”

Donski also acknowledged the support of his girlfriend and her parents, who travelled to watch him compete during the tournament.

Henning's victory earned him prize money of R157,396 and 50 ATP ranking points, a reward that sees him break into the world's top 300 for the first time in his career.

For the 25-year-old South African, it was more than just a trophy - it was a milestone moment that could mark the beginning of an exciting new chapter on the international tennis circuit.

The win also ensured that Henning just 69 places on the latest ATP rankings, and he has now broken into the top 300 for the first time in his career, and now sits at 250th in the world.
