Weird Wide Web - Mech racing─── 15:18 Tue, 29 Jun 2021
In a story that sounds like it belongs in an anime series, an inventor has created a 4.6m tall, 3 000kg exoskeleton suit that he wants to use to start a mech racing league.
The Furrion Exo-Bionics Prosthesis was created by Jonathan Tippett, a Canadian artist and inventor. It has four mechanical legs and is powered by a battery weighing more than 360kg, giving it about an hour of life.
Tippet hopes Prosthesis will be the first of many exoskeleton suits, and plans to one day have enough to create a mech racing league he calls X-1 Mech Racing.
But what is mech racing? Oh, just a new sport that will pit pilot against pilot in massive, agile, high-powered, all electric, off-road running machines!
He hopes to help start the league with a Kickstarter campaign, where he offers to teach those donating over $2000 how to pilot an exoskeleton suit.
While his Kickstarter reached its funding goal of $25000 in just 24 hours, Tippett still only has one suit to use for training — and he estimates that it would cost $1.5 million to $2 million to build a second.
