In the first edition of Call A Guy, we chat to professional plumber Eben Stander, who gives us some money-saving tips to help us with our geysers and water pipes through this coming winter. From insulating your pipes, wrapping your geyser up in a blanket to prolong the time water stays warm, to when the right time is to switch your geyser on and off, Eben Stander helps us with some very important information. Eben not only helps us with our geyser, but he also gives tips on how we can save water throughout the year.

Below are some of the things you can do to become more efficient when it comes to the energy used in your house:

1. Switch off the geyser when not in use.
2. Reduce the temperature of your geyser by turning the thermostat temperature control down to between 55°C and 60°C.
3. Insulate your hot water pipes or fit in a geyser blanket to prevent heat loss and electricity wastage.
4. Check that you have the appropriate plumbing piping and the electrical isolator switch is within one metre of the geyser.
5. Make sure there’s a cover over the thermostat and element.
