The 29-year-old lock, Carl Wegner, is delighted to be back at the Toyota Cheetahs following a stint in Japan.

Wegner, whose late dad, Callie Wegner, also played for the Free State left Bloemfontein in 2018 to go and play for Toyota Verblitz in the Japanese Top League.

The former Junior Springbok became a dad again for the second time earlier in the week and is hopes his sons will carry on with the family tradition one day.

Wegner told OFM Sport that they are thrilled over the new addition to the family and he will be very proud if his sons can be the third generation of Free State players one day.

“Just glad he is healthy, mom is healthy as well and were are home now. We are very excited about the little man who joined the family. His big brother is also very excited and just wants to hold him the whole time, so we are very happy about the new addition.

“Hopefully they will be able to carry on with the tradition and wear the white-and-orange jersey in the future. I will be a very proud father if that can happen.

Wegner added that he is excited to be back at the Cheetahs a third time and to work with Hawies Fourie and Corniel van Zyl.

“I am very excited to be back. It is my third time at the Cheetahs and hopefully, there will be many more opportunities for me to wear the jersey.

“This is a place close to my heart and where I feel safe and at home. Very glad to be back under the new management, I have huge respect for all of them.

“Hawies was here when I started back in 2012, so I have a lot of respect for him as a coach. Corniel and all the other coaches speak for themselves.

“I hope that I can have a positive influence on the team when I get an opportunity and contribute where I can. I can’t wait to be back on the field with the boys and run around and throw the ball around a bit once everything has settled down a bit. I can’t wait to put the boots on a play a bit of ball once we get the green-light.”

Wegner previously also played for Stade Français in the French Top14 and he has represented the Free State and the Cheetahs in 75 games in all competitions.
