#OFMKidsCorner - A platform your kids can access to read stories aloud | News Article

In this time where libraries have been closed, books might be too expensive and data is something parents have to constantly manage, we have found a platform with stories that are free, use little data and are proudly South African.

I chat to Barbara Meyer from Nali Bali about the importance of reading aloud and sharing South African stories available in your mother language.

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is a national reading-for-enjoyment campaign to spark children’s potential through storytelling and reading. Nal’ibali is built on the simple logic that a well-established culture of reading can be a real game-changer for education in South Africa. Literacy skills are a strong predictor of future academic success in all subjects – and children who regularly read and hear engaging stories, in languages they understand, are well equipped and motivated to learn to read and write.

Nali Bali have created a Whatsapp platform that kids, parents and caregivers can access by means of a simple chat. These stories are aimed at getting children to read aloud and are available in many of our official languages as mother tongue reading is so important. Send the word "stories" to 060 044 2254 via Whatsapp and follow the menu prompts. For more activities visit www.nalibali.org Here you will also find free online courses and a variety of resources.
