Pig auctions temporarily suspended in FS due to African swine fever─── CHRISTAL-LIZE MULLER 05:20 Wed, 03 Jul 2019
The movement of pigs in the Free State have been stopped by suspending auctions temporarily in this province after an outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in two separate areas.
The director of Veterinary Services at the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in the province, Kristan Mojapelo, says this is some of the control measures that are in place to prevent the disease from spreading. According to him, all pigs infected with ASF on two separate farms at Heilbron and Koppies have been culled following outbreaks in North West, Mpumalanga and Gauteng. A temporarily ban on pork auctions are also effective in these provinces in an effort to stop the movement of pigs.
