SA’s footprint in export markets needs to grow─── CHRISTAL-LIZE MULLER 05:00 Fri, 26 Jul 2019
It is reassuring that the Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Thoko Didiza, acknowledges the sector's success in terms of export markets.
Wandile Sihlobo, agricultural economist and head of agribusiness research at the Agricultural Business Chamber, Agbiz, says South Africa’s export figures for 2018 shows exports make up 41% in value terms of its agricultural produce. He says the fact that Didiza indicated during her recent budget speech that South Africa's footprint in the export markets will need to be expanded in future, is good.
Sihlobo, in the light of this, notes the importance of monitoring animal health which can hamper the ease of exports. Logistics and the role it plays in agriculture are also important, especially with South Africa being an export-orientated sector, says Sihlobo.
