Irrigation farmers encouraged to stick to allowed water use─── CHRISTAL-LIZE MULLER 06:17 Thu, 19 Sep 2019
Dam levels in the Free State have dropped this week.
The spokesperson of the Department of Water and Sanitation in the province, Larry Crisp, says this can be attributed to increasing temperatures and farmers using water from dams for irrigation purposes. In the light of this, Crisp appeals to communities to use water wisely while farmers should stick to their allowed water quotas.
According to him, the level of dams in the province decreased from 80.2% last week to 79.4% this week while the levels were on 90.2% the same period last year. The level of some dams in the Free State are, however, full, like the Saulspoort Dam, which is supplied by the Liebenbergvlei River which is overflowing with a record level of 100.2%. He says the Gariep Dam, the largest reservoir in the country, is at a stable level of 80.9%, despite the fact that it decreased by 10% compared to the same period last year.
