Use antibiotics responsibly to prevent resistance─── CHRISTAL-LIZE MULLER 09:25 Wed, 25 Sep 2019
Beef producers and the industry as a whole need to administer antibiotic use and ensure that it is used responsibly. Farmers need to stick to prescribed doses when treating sick animals.
If the recommended dose is not applied, producers are in the danger of contravening the law and residues in the product can occur. Communication with veterinarians is also recommended. This is according to Dr Shaun Morris, a feedlot consultant at the Beefmaster Group.
He says in the United States (US) all antibiotics, whether it is an injectable product, a oral dosage or a dosage in feed, a prescription from a vet is required.
Current legislation is being tabled in this regard in South Africa, however, the challenge remains with communal farmers who do not have access to vets. Morris says government is, however, trying to address the problem through a community service programme by veterinarians following graduation.
