FairPlay: Master plan for poultry industry must be implemented accordingly─── CHRISTAL-LIZE MULLER 05:47 Wed, 13 Nov 2019
The FairPlay movement is extremely satisfied that a master plan for the poultry industry in South Africa is in place.
Especially after the movement campaigned relentlessly over the past three years for a plan to be developed, involving the input of all stakeholders. Lionel Adendorf, FairPlay spokesperson, says there is, however, a concern about the implementation of the plan.
The plan aims to grow the industry locally with higher consumption of products and to increase exports. In the process, job creation is a key focus. Adendorf says FairPlay does believe in the spirit of the poultry master plan and is convinced if it is implemented, as agreed, there would be success while the industry will grow to the levels where it can create the number of jobs that are required. It can then generate an efficient income to the fiscus and ensure the safest possible chicken is available to consumers.
He says there is hope that the South African government will set a tariff at the highest possible level, as there are great concerns about cheaper imports from Brazil and Europe and the effect it has on the South African industry. It weakens the local industry while it leaves consumers vulnerable to unsafe products.
