A group of pilots from across South Africa have joined hands to provide relief to communities in remote areas.

Felix Gosher, a commercial pilot from Gauteng, spearheaded the Covid Flight initiative in April this year. He says it was started by the group of pilots out of necessity, because they saw a need in communities in rural areas suffering economically under the national Covid-19 lockdown. Food donations have been mostly provided by farmers, who in Gosher's opinion are the real heroes, involved in the initiative.

Gosher says communities in remote areas cannot provide for themselves and flying missions started through this initiative to deliver food in remote areas in an effort to enhance service delivery. The project is in partnership with the government.

At this stage, it consists of a pilot database with pilots representing most South African provinces, except in the Free State and Northern Cape. More than 50 pilots and 40 airplanes are part of the Covid Flight project.

He says a lot of work is also done by road because of the feasibility of flying. Air missions are only applicable when deliveries are in remote areas.

The donations are mostly from farmers and the first run was made possible by the generous food donations by farmers.
