What is new in Farmer’s Weekly? | News Article

She focuses on good news  stories that feature in the latest edition of the magazine which will be available on shelves today. One of the stories include news from the South African canning fruit industry. Erasmus says this industry has been under pressure in recent years, but since the start of the lockdown as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, people who want to avoid frequent travelling to buy food, have now been opting for food with a longer shelf life. This contributed to an increase in the market for these goods. The industry now hopes through all the restrictions that consumers will continue to put canned products on their shopping lists in order to create a renewed trust in the product, which can lead to an increase in demand.

In another news story, the latest Crop Estimate Committee's release on the estimate summer grain and oil seed harvest this season shows that the country is likely to deliver the second largest harvest on record after the 2016/17 crop. This is welcome news for food security in South Africa. The expected harvest is 32% up from the previous year to 17.5 million tons for summer grains and oils seeds while the maize crop is up 3% from last year to 15.2 million tonnes.

That was Denine Erasmus, editor of Farmer's Weekly, only on The Agri Hour.
