Judgment in live stock export via ship case expected─── CHRISTAL-LIZE MULLER 10:42 Thu, 13 Aug 2020
A judgment in the National Council of SPCA's (NSPCA) application to interdict the export of live sheep across the equator by the companies Al Mawashi and the Livestock Transport and Trading Company, LTTC, is expected this week.
This comes after the live export matter was back in the Grahamstown High Court last week. The sheep is currently quarantined at a feedlot in Berlin in the Eastern Cape. Marcelle Meredith, CEO of the NSPCA, says they trust justice will prevail in this significant High Court case. OFM News' Christal-Lize Muller spoke to her on Wednesday....

She says proceedings finished in the High Court in Grahamstown on Friday, and at this stage, it is unsure when judgment will be rendered. Judgment is, however, expected this week and even though it is difficult to predict what the judgment will entail, the NSPCA is hopeful that they have a strong case, especially as far as animal cruelty is concerned.
She explains that the NSPCA's court application consists of two parts. It is Part A of the application that has just been heard. That entails ships leaving South Africa for the Middle East transporting live sheep at sea. The time frame for this application is from now until Part B of the application is heard in court. This application is asking for a total ban of the exportation of live animals via ship.
She says conditions on these vessels are horrifying. There is no ventilation for animals, who are not able to feed when they want to. Animals on these ships have to live in their own excrement, and ventilation is not suitable.
