Mechanisation remains a challenge facing women in agriculture.


This includes agri-parks which were implemented by the government to deal with this challenge, but when it comes to these parks there are also some obstacles. This is according to the Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development, Thoko Didiza, who was part of a webinar focusing on the realisation of women's equality through agriculture.  Another challenge facing women in the industry is access to land. Didiza said challenges like these were brought forward by women through constructive interaction with them where they had the opportunity to provide insight. Here is Didiza...

A lack of statistical data on how many women are in the sector and in what commodities they are active also remains a big challenge while access to research and technology is a problem. Together with that, extension and advisory services are far and in between. She said after these challenges were identified, they need to be addressed through engagement by all stakeholders which include government, government entries, private sector, women producers, and agri-entrepreneurs. 

The government has also decided to release state land of which more than half of that includes land to women. Beneficiaries will be trained, while effective land reform through supporting those who had received the land will take place. A targeted programme for female farmers and entrepreneurs will be developed in the space. 

A database of women who are engaged in agriculture will be developed, as well as agribusiness.
