───   CHRISTAL-LIZE MULLER 05:00 Fri, 11 Sep 2020

What's new in Farmer's Weekly? | News Article

In our Friday insert, only on OFM News' Agri Hour, Christal-Lize Muller speaks to the editor of Farmer’s Weekly, Denine Erasmus, about the latest news in the agricultural industry covered in the magazine ...

See PODCAST below

Erasmus says readers can expect some good news in the 18 September issue of Farmer’s Weekly as they talk about the cold weather conditions and good rainfall which was beneficial for fruit and wine farmers in the Western Cape. She says, overall, good harvest and a good season is expected for fruit and wine later this year in this province.

This issue also focuses on the latest update on South African citrus exports which is slowly winding down. However, Erasmus says a record level increase in citrus exports to the United States was experienced during the Covid-19 pandemic. She says this is due to the high demand for fruit that possesses immune-boosting properties as people try to remain healthy during the pandemic, which is a good indication for local citrus producers.

Another topic covered in this edition is how the easing of lockdown regulations in South Africa is reigniting the fear within the poultry industry that there will be a large-scale import of cheap chicken products into the country. This, as countries such as Brazil have a lot of stock built up due to low demand during the lockdown. Erasmus explains that some poultry importers and exporters say that there are sufficient protection instruments in place to prevent that any dumping takes place.
