#Afasa: 'Justified anger' of farmers at Senekal was preventable | News Article

The African Farmers Association of South Africa, Afasa, is saddened and angry about the death of the young Brendin Horner, who was killed on the farm he managed in the Paul Roux district in the Free State.

Nakana Masoka, secretary-general of the organisation, says Horner was a talented future leader of the sector and his death is a great loss to agriculture. However, he adds, the incident at the gathering of a large group of people in Senekal, where two suspects appeared in the Local Magistrate's Court on Tuesday in connection with the murder of Horner, could have been coordinated better. He says if there was more control, it could have been prevented that farmers' "justified anger" led to violence and damage done to state property. Nakana says these actions now undermine agriculture's real struggle against the government to protect agricultural communities.

Afasa, however, condemns the continuous attacks on farmers and livestock theft, which are huge ongoing concerns for farmers. Masoka is convinced farming communities are not dealing with individuals in this regard, but rather with syndicates, who have connections in high places.

Masoka is therefore making a serious plea to the government to invest more in the police so that service delivery can improve.
