This edition of Farmer’s Weekly, which is a combined issue for 1 and 8 January, will be available on shelves from the 1st of January 2021.
The news section of this issue comprises of the second part of the magazine’s commodity outlook overview. Erasmus adds that they take a look at different subsectors such as maize, nuts, avocado’s, the red meat sector, consumer spending and what new year has in store for these agricultural industries.
She explains that maize plantings are expected to rise due to favourable weather conditions, while the red meat sector is still recovering after bad years of drought and the outbreak of diseases. But, red meat producers are hoping that they would see more export opportunities emerging in 2021.
When looking at the poultry sector, Erasmus says that consumer spending power will be determining how the new year pans out for the consumption of chicken meat.
Lastly, due to the impact of Covid-19 on consumers across the world, especially in Asia, poor economic outlook for consumers might have a negative effect on the demand for nuts, specifically macadamia nuts, in the coming year.
