NWU Gallery invites you to see art that not only reflects, but restores─── 09:00 Tue, 09 Jun 2026
Curator at the NWU Gallery, Sheryl Msomi, joins Yolanda Maartens on the OFM Art Beat to talk about the latest group exhibition hosted in Potchefstroom.
NWU Gallery is hosting Repair of the Present, a thought-provoking group exhibition that reflects on identity, memory, and cultural inheritance through the eyes of contemporary South African youth.
Featuring works by Abongile Sidzumo, Bulumko Mbete, Henrico Greyling, Luyanda Zindela, Neo Theku, Omolemo Rammile, Rohini Amratlal, and Thalente Khomo.
The exhibition marks 50 years since the 1976 youth uprising and explores how today’s generation engages with history, storytelling, and cultural memory.
Curated by Sheryl Msomi, the exhibition examines the idea of sovereignty in modern youth culture – not as freedom from history, but as the power to decide how inherited stories and identities are carried, challenged, and transformed.

The exhibition is on till 24 July. Photo Supplied
Through themes of domestic labour, indigenous knowledge, and collective memory, the artists question who controls the archive, who preserves culture, and how history is remembered in an increasingly connected world.
Rather than relying on monuments or official records, the exhibition highlights the quieter, often overlooked ways in which memory and identity are sustained.
