Residents of Vrede in the Free State will this week be afforded an opportunity to lay their claims with the Department of Labour.

This, as the Employment and Labour Department Minister, Thulas Nxesi, is on Wednesday expected to embark on an outreach programme to the town where he will also hold a special meeting with community members and identified farmworkers in the Warden area. During this service delivery programme, residents will be engaged on labour issues they might have and be educated on the department’s Compensation Fund, Unemployment Insurance Fund and many other services.

Spokesperson Josial Ramokoena says this is to offer people living in remote areas easy access to the department and its entities. He says during this programme they will engage farm workers and employees in other sectors about their rights and challenges they experience in their workplaces.

“The minister will seal his visit on a high note by participating in blitz inspections which will be conducted on farms in Warden. These inspections will give the minister a better sense of the level of compliance to labour legislation in the area in an effort to ensure that the rights of workers are protected and promoted at all material times,” said Ramokoena.

He adds other government departments such as Home Affairs, Social Development, Agriculture, Education, the South African National Defence Force, and the South African Police Service have also been invited to render their respective services to residents.

Nxesi’s meeting with community members is expected to kick off from 09:00 at the Evungwini Secondary School.
