#CoronavirusNW: Mine compliance in the spotlight─── LUCKY NKUYANE 07:16 Wed, 27 May 2020

Measures put in place to stem the spread of the coronavirus at the North West's Impala Platinum Mine following two confirmed cases will be scrutinised today.
This, as MEC for Health, Madoda Sambatha, will be visiting the mine in Rustenburg to monitor workplace compliance with Covid-19 lockdown regulations. Recently the Harmony Gold Mine in the province also confirmed two cases of the virus, which led to a temporary halt in operations.
Sambatha says there are 21 confirmed mine-related cases, of which 12 is in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District, which includes Klerksdorp, seven in Bojanala, which includes Rustenburg, and two in Ngaka Modiri Molema, which includes the provincial capital of Mahikeng. So far the province has 85 active cases after 29 recoveries and one death reported from the total 115 confirmed cases across 5 districts in the province.
So far, the Bojanala and Dr Kenneth Kaunda districts both have over 33 active cases in the province. MEC Sambatha adds from his visit to the said mine he will proceed to Brits to check the state of readiness of the newly built Brits Forensic Pathology Unit.
On Thursday he is also expected to join field workers for Covid-19 mass screening and testing in Mapaputle village in the Moses Kotane Local Municipality.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize on Tuesday night announced that South Africa now has 24 264 confirmed cases of the virus. Mkhize also announced that the death toll linked to Covid-19 has jumped to 524 deaths while 12 741 recoveries have been reported countrywide.
