An accident involving three cars on the R30 outside Allanridge has led to the road being temporarily closed for the second time in two days.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening, 24 hours after another collision.

Welkom-based emergency medical service, 1Life911 EMC, says one of the vehicles on Saturday evening landed in the body of water that flanks either side of this accident-prone gravel section of the R30. The two occupants of this vehicle were saved from drowning.

The pile-up occurred a day after two people drowned when their navy blue Mazda plunged into the water following an accident.

Free State police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, told OFM News that the bodies were that of a man and a woman. The deceased are yet to be identified and an inquest has been registered for further investigation.

Whilst the occupants of the Mazda lost their lives, the three people in the first vehicle managed to escape from drowning.

Thakeng sternly warns motorists to reduce their speed when they arrive at the R30, especially between Allanridge and Bothaville, as it was recently flooded after heavy rains.

The flooding on this road gained national attention after an Intercape bus liner ended up trapped in the same body of water mentioned above. Whilst over 80 passengers were successfully rescued, police charged the driver of the bus with a reckless and negligent driving charge for ignoring warning signs that indicated that the road could not be travelled on.

However, even though the part of gravel road has been reinforced, it remains dangerous, with several accidents reported each weekend.
