Parts of Welkom left in the dark─── HEIDRÈ MALGAS 08:30 Sat, 18 Jun 2022

Parts of Welkom in the Free State have been struggling with electricity for the past week.
According to Khojane Matutle, Communications Manager for Matjhabeng Local Municipality, one of the electrical substations burnt down in St Helena this week and the residents have been without electricity since.
“Because of the unavailability of transformers in the country, it could take the municipality up to eight to 12 weeks to get a new transformer,” said Matutle.
Furthermore, residents in Bronville’s electricity has been on and off every day for the past week due to cable theft and low voltage to supply the community with electricity.
“Although the electricity gets restored after being off, there is no guarantee that it won’t go off again because of sabotage and vandalism,” said Matutle.
He further added that they were in talks with Harmony Mine for a transformer to supply St Helena with electricity and the restoration time is unknown.
