Political parties welcome court judgment against MP─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 10:49 Wed, 01 Feb 2023
Political parties welcomed the judgment of the Orkney Magistrate's Court that denied the ANC Member of Parliament (MP) bail.
Sibusiso Kula (34) was denied bail on Tuesday after he was charged with murdering his wife. Kula, who is also the former ANC Youth League secretary in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda Region, was arrested on 20 January 2023 for allegedly stabbing his wife to death.
Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) national spokesperson Leigh-Ann Mathys welcomed the court's judgment. This, after stating that women continue to be on the receiving end of inadequate police work which has increased in the last ten years, as research by the South African Research Council released in October 2022 has proven. Mathys says the EFF will lodge a complaint with the Ethics Committee to call for the suspension of the perpetrator without pay. She further adds that the bail judgment against Kula must be a warning to all men who rape, abuse, and murder women, that they will face the full might of the law.

“We welcome this court’s judgment that denied bail to the ANC Member of Parliament, Sibusiso Kula, who was accused of stabbing to death his 31-year-old wife, Mrs Jennifer Mohlumi. We know that the National Prosecuting Agency presented a sound case against Kula’s bail application and we call on the NPA to continue with the same energy, the same dedication and the same turnaround times in all femicide cases,” Mathys said.

Meanwhile, the ANC Women’s League in the North West also welcomed the bail denial against Kula. The ANCWL North West's convenor, Bitsa Lenkopane, stated that the denial of bail against Kula moves to assert the justice administration’s plight in addressing the gender-based violence scourge. She said they have realised that most victims come from a poor background and mostly find themselves trapped in relationships for economic survival and end up being abused and/or killed. Lenkopane further added that most children are orphans today as a result of fathers who were perpetrators of GBV. Lenkopane urged the ANC and its government to come out clear and pronounce itself in a way that will assure the society that it is fighting this GBV pandemic.
