There have been messages making the rounds on social media for the past few days about a peaceful protest on Monday 13 February 2023, by different taxi associations in the Free State and Northern Cape.

For a peaceful protest to take place, a permit needs to be applied for at the South African Police Service (SAPS) and with other relevant authorities, which, according to OFM News’ sources in Kimberley, had not been done by the end of business on Friday 10 February.

The messages that have been doing rounds, state that all roads will be closed from 04:00 in the morning on Monday and taxis will not be operating.

The towns mentioned include Bloemfontein in the Free State and Kimberley, Barkly West and Hopetown in the Northern Cape.

Taxi associations are expected to hand over memorandums to the Department of Transport.

The associations that will allegedly be part of the peaceful protest are Long Distance Taxi Association, Kimberley Taxi Association (KTA), Thusano Taxi Association (TTA) and Kimberley Local Taxi Association (KLTA).

The messages explain that the taxi associations will drive together against corruption and other issues that have affected them negatively.

As there’s no confirmation that the abovementioned will occur, the public is asked to make the necessary arrangements to be safe and not be caught off guard on Monday morning.

This is a developing story.
