UPDATE: Bogus prosecutor arrested in Free State─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 10:19 Fri, 03 Mar 2023
A bogus prosecutor has been arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit after attempting to bribe a man facing criminal charges.
The 49-year-old suspect was arrested in Bothaville on Wednesday 1 March 2023.
According to the Free State Hawks’ Fikiswa Matoti, the arrest of the bogus prosecutor comes after he had allegedly pretended to be a prosecutor and approached a man who is facing a criminal matter that occurred in 2021.
He allegedly demanded R100 000 to "withdraw" the charges against him. The two allegedly met at the bank in the Bothaville Central Business District (CBD) to withdraw the demanded gratification from a fixed account. It’s alleged that the bogus prosecutor demanded R5000 to be withdrawn immediately from the ATM while waiting for the entire amount.
Matoti said the complainant alerted the Hawks a day prior and the suspect was arrested after the transaction. Matoti added that the 49-year-old suspect is facing charges of extortion and will appear before the Bothaville Margistrate's Court on Friday.
